Holistic Child Development
Why is holistic child development important? Children are disproportionately impacted by poverty, which can stunt growth, hinder education, and make them more susceptible to illness and disease. Poverty is more than a lack of money; it is the deprivation of access to good health, education, and choice. Children living in poverty are forced into impossible situations—instead of going to school, they go to work too early, and instead of living healthy lives, they struggle with malnutrition.
Food Security
Why food security? Hundreds of millions of people will go to bed hungry tonight—and every night. Hunger is the result of extreme poverty, and it keeps people stuck in the poverty trap. Without nutrition, children's minds and bodies cannot develop properly. Malnutrition compounds the effects of diseases, including HIV and AIDS, malaria, and pneumonia. And it keeps people from fully engaging in productive work and income generation.
Support for Women and Girls
The reality of gender inequality. Gender inequality is both a major cause and effect of hunger and poverty, and nearly everywhere women and girls are disproportionately vulnerable to those effects. In developing countries, women make up almost half of the agriculture labor force, but they often don’t have access to the same resources as men.
Clean Water
Why clean water and sanitation? More than 2 billion people around the world do not have access to clean and safe water at home. As a result, one of the leading causes of death in low-income communities is illness due to waterborne disease, lack of sanitation, and poor hygiene practices. In some places, children and women walk hours each day to gather water instead of going to school or spending time on other productive activities.
